This is from the July Internet Lawyer (www.internetlawyer.com), about
the free tm database that's due soon:

As we go to press...

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has announced it
will make the full data base of the nation's patents since 1976 and
trademark text and images starting from the late 1800's available on the
World Wide Web beginning in August, when trademark text will go on line.
Trademark images and patent text will follow in November. Patent images
linked to the text of the patents will be made available by March 1999.
The data base of more than two million patents will be searchable by key
word, as will more than 800,000 registered trademarks and 300,000
pending trademarks. This initiative follows the successful release of
SEC data via EDGAR on the Net. Release of patent and trademark data is
likely to have an effect on the commercial databases, like Lexis and
Dialog, and is another step forward in making public data freely
available to the public. For more info visit the PTO online
(http://www.uspto.gov/).
