Directory of Recommended Banking & Commercial Law Firms

Cross-posted; please forgive duplication.

This directory, from the Association of Banking and Commercial Law Firms
has been discussed on law library lists in past years. Often there have
been questions concerning the organization, and as I remember, not much
information was to be found.

Today I received a proof for the 1999 edition of this directory, as I have
in the last couple of years. In past years, our listing was
complimentary, but reading the cover letter, this year there is shown a
$320 listing fee.

I called the 800 number shown on the letterhead, which is to a publishing
company (I didn't catch the name -- sorry), which also publishes a
directory of insurance firms. I said that we had been given listings in
the banking directory on a complimentary basis in the past and was there
indeed now a charge. The lady answering the phone said she would check
with her manager; she got right back to me and said that since we had
listed before, we would receive the listing in the 1999 directory on a
complimentary basis.

One of my attorneys had received earlier this week a proof for the
insurance directory, so I asked about that one (in fact she had initially
assumed that it was about the insurance directory that I was calling), and
she wasn't sure about the fee for it, since we hadn't listed in it before.

I asked her to send me a letter regarding our complimentary listing in
each directory, and she said I would receive one.

I of course am not going to send in the proofs until I get this letter.

The only reason I am posting to these lists is that perhaps a HEADS-UP
might be necessary to those firms who have previously listed in these
directories on a complimentary basis. I might have inadvertently missed
the notice of a listing fee if I hadn't re-read the cover letter.
Recognition of the title and force of habit could have led me to sending
in the proofs and thereby incurring an unforeseen charge.
