Richard L. Beer, Bardie C Wolfe, Jr. Named Recipients of the 1998 Gallagher
Award

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Awards Committee has
selected Richard L. Beer and Bardie C. Wolfe, Jr., as the 1998 recipients of
the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes
extended and sustained service to law librarianship, or exemplary service to
the Association, or contributions to professional literature.

Richard L. Beer is the retired Library Board Administrator for the
Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library in Pontiac, Michigan. A dedicated
member of AALL since 1960, Beer served the Association in many capacities,
including Treasurer in 1983-86. He was instrumental in founding the AALL
State, Court, and Counties Special Interest Section, and was honored for his
distinguished service by that group.

Bardie C. Wolfe, Jr., is Law Librarian and Professor of Law Emeritus at the
St. Thomas University Law School, Miami, Florida. Professor Wolfe is
considered a pioneer in the use of automation, one of the first to build a
law library collection using innovative technological applications. He is an
expert in digital research as well as statistical computation and analysis.

Established in 1984 as the Distinguished Service Award, this honor was
renamed the Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award in 1990.
Nominees are those who are or at one time have been a member of AALL and who
are near or at the end of their careers. The award may be given
posthumously. It is the highest honor presented by the Association.

Kendall F. Svengalis Named Recipient of 1998 Joseph L. Andrews
Bibliographical Award

The American Association of Law Libraries' (AALL) Award Committee has
selected Kendall F. Svengalis as the 1998 recipient of the Joseph L. Andrews
Bibliographical Award for his publication, Legal Information Buyer's Guide
and Reference Manual, 1997-98, published by the Rhode Island Law Press,
Barrington, Rhode Island.

Kendall Svengalis is the State Law Librarian at Rhode Island State Law
Library, a position he has held since 1982. His bibliography was cited for
its important contribution to law librarianship and its usefulness as a
reference tool in virtually all areas of the law library operation. In
announcing the award, the Committee stated "it was judged a uniquely
valuable bibliographical guide to legal materials especially legal treatises
in various topical categories and state-specific materials. The depth of
coverage in many categories, accurate descriptions, sound evaluations of
materials and helpful organization are among its many strengths."

The Joseph L. Andrews Bibliographical Award was established in 1967 in honor
of Joseph L. Andrews, Reference Librarian at the Association of the Bar of
the City of New York. The Andrews Award is given for significant
contribution to legal bibliographical literature, measured primarily by its
creative and evaluative elements and the extent to which judgment was a
factor in its formulation.
