POSITION: Coordinator, Information Services
DEPARTMENT: Bora Laskin Law Library, Faculty of Law
DATE REQUIRED: As soon as possible

This is a senior position that offers an experienced law librarian the
opportunity to shape and develop the information services provided to
faculty and students and the collections that support those services.

Currently, the Library supports the teaching, learning and research needs
of approximately 33 full-time law faculty, 55 part-time adjunct professors,
515 undergraduate law students and 35-40 graduate students. Within the
Faculty, course offerings are broad, increasingly inter-disciplinary in
nature and demonstrate a growing emphasis on global and regional studies.
The Library is used extensively by other members of the University and by
members of the legal profession. The building, opened in March of 1991,
houses a collection of over 235,000 hard-copy volumes that includes a
growing number of the leading legal CD-ROMs. Extensive use is made of
on-line databases such as Quicklaw, Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis, the Internet
and the University Library system's growing collection of full-text
e-journal literature. The Library's Web site can be found at
http://www.law-lib.utoronto.ca.

RESPONSIBILITIES: As part of the Library's administrative team, the
Coordinator administers the Information Services Unit: managing staff and
financial resources, developing and implementing plans, policies and
procedures and taking responsibility for the delivery of all information
services including access (circulation and reserve, stacks, interlibrary
loan and document delivery), reference and research and training and
orientation. This librarian takes a proactive role in providing reference
and research assistance to faculty and students by developing knowledge of
individual needs, answering questions, identifying research sources,
suggesting research strategies and providing one-on-one instruction in the
use of library materials and research tools. The incumbent coordinates and
participates in the instruction and orientation programme delivered by
library staff and, in addition, is expected to lecture in the Legal
Research and Writing Programme for first year students and to participate
in the credit course, Advanced Legal Research and Analysis. Another major
component of the position is collection development: the incumbent selects
and deselects materials in all relevant formats, working closely with
faculty members and using course descriptions and the Collection
Development Policy as guides.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled law reference
and research librarian with 5-10 years of academic law library experience
that includes some administration. Experience in collection development and
management in a law school setting will be a definite asset. Excellent
communication skills as well as a demonstrated ability to teach both large
and small groups are essential. These abilities and skills will be based on
excellent educational qualifications that include both an MLS from an
accredited programme and a law degree.

This is a position for a dynamic and self-motivated person who can,
nevertheless, operate as part of a team. Excellent judgment, flexibility
and organizational and analytical skills are also required. The successful
candidate will enjoy planning, delivering and evaluating services for
faculty and students based on sound knowledge of modern information and
computer technologies as well as on traditional legal research tools and
practices. The energy and temperament to thrive on a demanding work
schedule will also be assets.
