I am forwarding (with the author's permission) an article by Dick
Danner. It is really a great read and may provoke some discussion on
the list. Duke has been aggressive in its use of technology (e.g., all
of its journals are available free full-text on the web) and Dick is one
of the reasons. He is truly one of the professions visionaries ... and
not nearly as old as he looks. ;>) (Sorry, even visionaries need a
little ribbing).

Some of you may be interested in taking a look at a paper titled: "Redefining a Profession," which discusses the place of librarianship among the information professions, and is mounted at:
<http://www.law.duke.edu/fac/danner/framed.html>
It can also be found through my page in the Faculty area of the Duke Law website.
We mounted the paper (which will be published later this year in Law Library Journal), as part of Duke's program in electronic publishing. The template is similar to that used for our electronic journals, but has been modified to provide the means for faculty to publish works in progress (for comment by colleagues) or papers that will not appear in other media. The presentation is not elaborate, but tries to take advantage of web publication by providing internal navigational tools (links between the body of the article and footnotes, direct links to sections of the article) and external links to accessible web sites and documents. It also provides the capabilities for downloading a .pdf version of the WordPerfect manuscript for the paper and for e-mailing comments to the author (which I encourage you to do).
Melanie Dunshee, Sarah Roberts, and Amy Vickers were instrumental in completing this project. I also want to thank Frank Houdek for his help with the version that will appear in LLJ.
