For case retrieval, you could try Versuslaw. It is significantly less expensive than Westlaw or Lexis. I like their search engine very much. The only problem with Versuslaw is their coverage. Otherwise I would use it all the time, since, they give law students, professors, and librarians free unlimited passwords.
For more information on Versuslaw, see my review a few months ago in LLRX. The URL is http://www.llrx.com/extras/versuslaw.htm

It really depends on your usage. If you use it once in a blue moon, the
CD rom version is good, If you use shepards frequent, and want the
latest cases then the online service is good, provided you are willing
to pay the additional cost(s)

BTW Thank for the 1997 update, I revised my PC to show proper year.
P.S. Does anyone know of a cheaper service other than lexis or westlaw
to obtain case law? I am currently on Westdoc and find that for my
personal school study usage, it is becoming very expensive i.e. $8.00
per case.(average case retrival per month 10-20 cases)
thanks
