The Tarlton Law Library of the University of Texas School of Law is looking
for energetic, self-motivated librarians with a strong commitment to service
to provide assistance in all areas of the Law Library's public services.
There are presently two vacancies, and the Law Library reserves the right to
fill all or none of them.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Public Services Librarian will be responsible for a
number of public services functions, including providing reference
assistance and bibliographic instruction to the Law Library's users, writing
guides to the collections, and a variety of other duties. We are looking
for librarians who will take a leadership role in developing new programs
and services. Depending upon the qualifications and skills of the
successful applicant, specific responsibilities will include one or more of
the following, in addition to the general duties given above:
1) collection development in non-book formats, mainly microform but also
including electronic resources; 2) preparing the Teaching Quizmasters (TQs),
a team of upper-class students who provide legal research instruction to
first-year students; 3) assisting the Rare Books Librarian in preparing
exhibitions and publications that utilize the rare collections; 4) taking
part in the reference staff's faculty liaison program; 5) sharing the
evening/weekend reference rotation schedule, as well as responding to
reference requests that arrive via regular mail and electronically in
addition to routine in-house reference service; 6) teaching a course on
advanced legal research, the subject of which will depend upon the
librarian's interests and the law school's curricular needs; and/or 7)
preparing manuscripts for publication in the Law Library's Tarlton Law
Library Bibliography and other series.
QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library
Science; law library experience. The successful applicant must have
excellent communication skills and be able to work well with library staff
at all levels, as well as with faculty and students. A strong commitment to
public service is essential for this position.
PREFERRED: J.D. is strongly preferred but is not required. Knowledge of
and experience with CD-ROM and a variety of software such as Windows 95,
HTML, Netscape Navigator, MS PowerPoint as well as major electronic
information delivery formats (e.g., Folio Views, Premise) is also preferred.
SCHEDULE: The work schedule is a 40-hour week. Applicants must be willing to
work evenings and weekends whenever necessary.
SALARY: Negotiable, depending upon qualifications.
SETTING: Located on the UT campus in Austin, Texas, Tarlton Law Library
primarily serves the UT School of Law and the legal research needs of other
components of the largest state-supported university in the country.
Approximately 1,400 students and 70 full-time faculty are the primary users
of Tarlton's collection of more than 900,000 volumes and volume equivalents,
the fifth largest academic law library in the U.S. Other users include
members of the UT community, as well as members of the bar and the general
public. The Law Library is a member of the Research Libraries Group (RLG)
and uses INNOPAC for its public catalog and other library functions. A
diverse Law Library staff of 43 people combine a wide variety of skills,
education, and experience to provide the best possible collection and
services to users of its large and beautiful facility
