CATALOGING NOW!-AN ALCTS INSTITUTE ON THE PCC CORE RECORD

REGISTER NOW!
Preconference to the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law
Libraries (AALL)
Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, California July 10, 1998

Cosponsored by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a
division of the American Library Association, and AALL.

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has developed a new "core
standard." The PCC is introducing the core standard as a means of increasing
the pool of mutually acceptable records for copy cataloging, allowing
catalog librarians to use their time and expertise for original cataloging.

To promote the standard the Association for Library Collections & Technical
Services (ALCTS) and the PCC Standing Committee on Training are sponsoring a
workshop that will introduce catalog librarians, catalog department and
technical services administrators, and public service librarians to the
values of the PCC and the rationale behind the core record.

AUDIENCE
Catalog Librarians, Catalog Department and Technical Service Administrators,
and Public Service Librarians.

OBJECTIVE
To promote the values of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and make a
case for the use of a new cataloging standard -- 'CORE'.

After introducing the Program and the concept of the core record in a
plenary session, faculty will address specific issues for catalog
librarians, administrators, and public services librarians. In separate
breakout sessions catalog librarians will learn about creating core records
administrators will be introduced to the management and training of
catalogers in this new environment public services librarians will consider
the implications of core records available in OPACs.
