I agree that there is reason for serious concern here. Huge amounts are
being invested in the Internet, but so far, very few of these investments
are paying off. I think this means that we will see more and more schemes
of this kind as commercial interests become more aggressive in their
attempts to wring some revenue out of the net. Or, as some have
suggested, the digital bubble may burst--see Andersen, "The Digital
Bubble," The New Yorker, Jan. 19, 1998, p. 30. Neither of these outcomes
will be good for those who use the net for serious research.
