I have been asked to participate in a workshop for my library school's
current students. The topic is job hunting strategies and search tips.
The other panel members are faculty members. I am to attempt to fill in
for the person who normally would present a section on tips for special
libraries.
I would like to gather information from those of you who are special
librarians and who hire special librarians. What skills, experience,
attitudes do you look for in the candidate? Are there resume trends or
items that you find helpful? I want to leave this question as broad as
possible and hope that some of you will have ideas to share with these
students.
I will not disclose the individual or library for information I receive
but I would like to know a little about where the answer comes (what
sort of library, were you the job seeker, were you hiring, etc). Where
did you advertise/find an open professional position? Do you interview
at major conventions, and, if so, which ones?
Thank you for your help and ideas. These are good students and I do not
want to let them down. The discussion is about a week away. Please
respond to me directly rather than the list. Please excuse duplicate
postings (I made one national posting and one state focus list posting).
Feel free to forward this if you have a special librarian friend who
would be willing to share information and ideas.
