The Tarlton Law Library of the University of Texas School of Law has a new
position available for an energetic, self-motivated librarian with a strong
commitment to service who is knowledgeable about electronic resources and
can provide leadership and expertise to help integrate the best electronic
resources into the Law Library's collections and services.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Electronic Resources Librarian will be responsible
for identifying, evaluating, and recommending resources available through
non-traditional means such as the Internet and CD-ROM. Also responsible for
planning and implementing vendor and/or in-house training in use of these
resources for library staff, faculty, and students. Works closely with the
Deputy Law Librarian, the Director of the Computer Learning Center, the
Associate Director for Bibliographic Services, and other staff who are
responsible for collection development, reference services, and
bibliographic instruction, in order to integrate the use of appropriate
electronic resources into the Law Library's collections and services. Also
responsible for working with established database providers such as
Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw to ensure the suitability and success of their
efforts to train staff, faculty, and students in the use of their products.
Reviews and makes recommendations to library administration regarding
licensing agreements for electronic resources. Advises on selection of
hardware and application software for library staff, and develops strategic
planning for upgrading both.
In addition, the Electronic Resources Librarian will spend approximately 25%
of work time on tasks related to the Law Library's Web site and serves as
the Web Administrator for the Library's Web site. This includes working
with and advising staff who contribute information to the site, and ensuring
that the site is in compliance with applicable University and other
guidelines concerning its structure and substance.
Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful
applicant, the Electronic Resources Librarian may also be called upon to
share reference, liaison, and other public service responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library
Science; law library experience; demonstrated knowledge of and experience
with CD-ROM and a variety of software, e.g., Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and
Novell NetWare, MS Word, WordPerfect, MS PowerPoint, Netscape Navigator,
HTML, email, ftp, and major electronic information delivery formats (e.g.,
Folio Views, Premise), as well as Web publication methods (e.g., HTML) and
standards. Some knowledge of Perl programming very desirable. The
successful applicant must have excellent communication skills and be able to
work well with library staff at all levels, as well as with faculty and
students. A strong commitment to public service is essential for this position.
PREFERRED: J.D. is preferred but is not required.
SCHEDULE: The work schedule is a 40-hour week, usually 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.,
Monday-Friday, but applicants must be willing to work evenings and weekends
as necessary.
SALARY: Negotiable, depending upon qualifications.
SETTING: Located on the UT campus in Austin, Texas, Tarlton Law Library
primarily serves the UT School of Law and the legal research needs of other
components of the largest state-supported university in the country.
Approximately 1,400 students and 70 full-time faculty are the primary users
of Tarlton's collection of more than 900,000 volumes and volume equivalents,
the fifth largest academic law library in the U.S. Other users include
members of the UT community, as well as members of the bar and the general
public. The Law Library is a member of the Research Libraries Group (RLG)
and uses INNOPAC for its public catalog and other library functions. A
diverse Law Library staff of 43 people combine a wide variety of skills,
education, and experience to provide the best possible collection and
service to users of its large and beautiful facility.
