Greetings!
On behalf of the Southwestern Association of Law Libraries and the Houston
Area Law Libraries, I invite you to Houston to attend our Joint Meeting.
While our Joint Meeting runs from March 26-28, 1998, SWALL and HALL are
offering two pre-meeting workshops. A pre-meeting workshop will be held
all day on March 25th at South Texas College of Law when James S. Heller,
AALL's Vice-President/President-Elect, presents "Applying Copyright Law in
Libraries". Another pre-meeting workshop, "Legal Research for the Non-Law
Librarian", will be offered the morning of March 26th.
At this 1998 Joint Meeting, both SWALL and HALL will be celebrating
special anniversaries: SWALL's fortieth and HALL's twentieth! The theme
of our program is: A Kaleidoscope of Changes. Although technology and the
evolution of our profession (in such programs as "Cyberspace Law" and
"Knowledge Management") will be the focus at one end of our program
spectrum, we will raise our glasses to toast the founders of our respective
chapters and ask ourselves if all of these changes have made us better law
librarians. One program which may help put this part of the spectrum into
perspective is: Legal Bibliography: the Lost Art.
Houston offers a kaleidoscope of activities and, of utmost interest to me,
dining choices. As America's fourth-largest city, it is in many ways a
good example of the American "melting pot". In a city full of wonderful
restaurants, I consider the Mexican, Latin American and Vietnamese cuisine
to be among the best. The Wortham Center is home to the city's ballet and
opera. One of our special meeting events will take us to the Menil
Collection and the Contemporary Arts Museum, with dinner (including Bananas
Foster for dessert) afterwards at Brennan's.
And, did you know that "Houston" was the first word ever spoken on the
Moon? Well, after the meeting concludes on March 28th, you may have the
opportunity to "touch and feel the adventures of manned space flight" at
Space Center Houston. A Space Center tour is planned from 12:30 - 5:30 p.m.
on March 28th for an additional fee.
