Boxing Day is celebrated on December 26th in Canada and Britain. However,
my understanding of its origin is different from the other responses. A
woman who was born and raised in England invited me to a Boxing Day party
one year. She said the day originated in times when folks travelled long
distances at the holidays. The day after Chritmas was the time for
visitors to box up their gifts and pack the "buggy." Food and libations
were served while this chore was handled. The day evolved into a holiday;
people needed the time to pack, and they enjoyed themselves at the same
time. I think it is a pretty convincing explanation.
