Federal inmates could be found by the Inmate Locator Service (202-307-0858) run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

There is a database-- but it is only available to law enforcement agecies.
BRB Publications publishes "State Public Records" that lists the agencies
and procedures for each state to obtain that information. BRB
Publications 602-838-8909. I would start by giving a call to the
Department of Corrections in the most likely state or states.

My firm does very little, if any, criminal work. I am therefore at a
complete loss as to how to approach the issue before me.

We are trying to locate a person who is incarcerated. We need to do a
name change for his child, and he needs to be notified. We have NO
information as to WHERE he is imprisioned.

Is there some great big database somewhere that would list individuals
who are incarcerated and their location? Is there an agency that would
give me this information if I provide them with a Social Security Number
or other type of identification?

Any information anyone can provide will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
