ARL Announces....

ARL Releases 1995-96 Academic Law and Medical Library Statistics

ARL has published the third issue of its popular series that describes
the law and medical libraries of ARL universities. This new edition
reports data on the collections, staffing, expenditures, and public
service activities of 68 law and 59 medical libraries. Trend analysis
of monograph and serial prices in law and medical libraries, along with
trends in the growth of collections, expenditures, and interlibrary loan
activities, are also included.

This year's report compares law and medical libraries to the larger
research collections in each research university. For example, the
largest percent of the total library collection represented by a medical
collection is 34%, while the largest law collections represent 20%.
Separate charts show that medical libraries comprise 8% of the volumes
held in academic ARL libraries overall and 13% of library expenditures.
Law libraries have 9% of the volumes held, but are 11% of the total
expenditures. Of their own budgets, law libraries spent a higher
percent on library materials (44%) compared to medical libraries (37%).
Medical libraries spent more of their budgets on operating expenditures
(16%) than law libraries (11%).

The law and medical library data are aggregated in the annual ARL
Statistics, a compilation of statistics from the member libraries of the
Association of Research Libraries. With the availability of these new
reports, university administrators can disaggregate law and medical
library statistics to make institutional comparisons more meaningful.

Also available are the previous two issues, which cover the years 1977
to 1995. ASCII formatted disks for all three compilations are available
for $15 each. The ARL Statistics are also available on the Internet at
<http://arl.cni.org/stats/Statistics/stat.html>,
<gopher://arl.cni.org:70/11/stat>, and <ftp://arl.cni.org/stats>.
