Dear Law Libbers,
Earlier this year, I posted a message about our upcoming AALL program
: "Doing the Right Thing : Internal Library Ethics," a program which
will analyze and address some common workplace ethical issues.
Since the annual meeting is just a month away, I thought that I should
repost our plea for assistance, in case anyone had missed the first
posting, or in case someone has been dying to give us an ethical
scenario, but alas, the email with our contact information was
deleted.
If you have encountered any ethical problems (either in
the present or in the past) as a librarian, we would greatly
appreciate your input about the problem itself and/or any solutions
you may have devised. The focus here should NOT be on librarians'
interaction with patrons, but rather on librarian/librarian or
librarian/manager relations.
Example : Libby, a reference librarian, has been taking math
classes during working hours (she's trying to earn a Ph.D). She is
taking these classes without the consent of her supervisors, and
she is not making up the work time that she misses. In fact, she
has been late for her reference shift several times over the last
few weeks due to her class time. The other reference librarians
have been covering for her. What has Libby done wrong, if
anything? Should the other reference librarians take any action?
If so, should they approach Libby first, or should they approach
Libby's supervisor?
You can contact any of the coordinators (listed below) by any method
available to you : mail, email, telephone, fax, parachuting couriers,
trained monkeys, etc. We'll ignore any coffee stains or paw prints.
:)
For our program, we will simply use commonly occuring situations as
a basis for our panel's discussion. The actual letters or emails
will go no further than the three program members. We look forward
to hearing from you (and for those who have already replied, we
would like to thank you for your messages)!
Thank you!
Michelle
