ELECTRONIC INFORMATION SERVICES LIBRARIAN
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH BARCO LAW LIBRARY
The University of Pittsburgh Barco Law Library is seeking enthusiastic and
talented candidates for the position of Electronic Information Services
Librarian. As the title suggests, this position is charged with the
development and use of electronically accessed information via the
Internet, CD-ROM services, and commercial online sources. The position is
also responsible for the development and maintenance of the Law Library's
web page and Cybrary.
QUALIFICATIONS: The position requires a Master's degree from an ALA
accredited program, with a J.D. degree strongly preferred. One to three
years experience in a law library or demonstrated knowledge of law and
legal materials in a reference and/or teaching environment is also
required. The successful candidate should also possess excellent
communication skills, self-initiative, and enthusiasm for both electronic
and print resources. The candidate should also possess extensive knowlege
of Internet resources, including experience with the development and
maintenance of WWW pages; extensive knowledge of CD-ROM hardware and
applications in both networked and non-networked environments, including
experience with CD-ROM servers; extensive knowledge of Windows-based
computers, operating systems and applications in a Novell networked
environment; and experience with LEXIS, WESTLAW and DIALOG and traditional
legal materials. Experience in formal and informal teaching is desirable.
DUTIES: The Electronic Information Services Librarian is responsible for
the continued development and enhancement of electronic information
resources at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, including:
Developing the Internet as an effective information resource at
the School of Law, including redeveloping and maintaining the Barco Law
Library WWW page, providing individualized and group instruction to
students and faculty on Internet tools and resources, and identifying
Internet resources of benefit to the School of Law community.
Coordinating CD-ROM activities, including updating the databases
and accompanying software in both networked and non-networked
environments, working with the Computing Systems Administrator in
maintaining the CD-ROM hardware and networking applications, facilitating
training on CD-ROM databases, conducting specialized searches for faculty
and students, and recommending new CD-ROM resources.
Coordinating the Law Library's participation in the University of
Pittsburgh Digital Library. The Digital Library is a cooperative effort
among the University of Pittsburgh libraries which provides a number of
licenced databases and public domain resources through an intra-library
network. The Electronic Information Services Librarian will coordinate
instruction on and awareness of Digital Library databases for faculty,
students and staff, interact with University Library or School of Law
systems staff on maintenance of the Law Library's systems, and represent
the Law Library in Digital Library development and planning activities.
The Electronic Information Services Librarian also provides
extensive reference service to the Law School's faculty and students, and
other library users by participating in the Reference Desk rotation and
through individual appointments, participating in teaching basic and
advanced legal research, writing research guides and other law library
programs as needed. The reference rotation may require some evening
hours.
Active participation in professional activities such as
participation in national, regional and local organizations, University
activities and committees, and professional scholarship are encouraged and
expected as part of this position.
COMMENTS: Success in this position requires both technical ability and an
innovative public service orientation, along with strong analytical
abilities and the ability to work cooperatively with others. This
position works closely with the Computing Systems Administrator and other
Library and University staff, School of Law faculty, as well as students,
attorneys and the general public. Salary and faculty librarian rank are
commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include
