I have been asked to write for the "Juris Libris" column in the
acquisitions journal _Against the Grain_. I am interested in hearing from
librarians on the topic of "Challenges to choosing the right medium
(print, CD-ROM, Internet, microform, multiple formats)," especially in
terms of legal and government materials.
Selecting the right medium or mix of media can be particularly challenging
today because of factors such as rapidly changing product lines, diversity
of users' needs and technological skills, swift technological evolution,
and serious budget constraints for acquisitions and user services.
I'd be grateful for actual accounts of recent situations in which
you've faced complex choices regarding the proper format for a source.
What sources in particular posed these problems? What factors entered into
your decision? What tools proved helpful to you (specific articles,
bibliographies, etc.)? What recommendations do you have for others making
these difficult choices?
I will be pleased to credit everyone whose comments I make use of in the
column.
