cdrom not a long term medium?

I need to do some research about cd-roms, how reliable they are and all.
I remember seeing something on this list(?) that said they were not a very
RELIABLE LONG TERM MEDIUM, and probably just a transition. I would
appreciate any lead. Please respond directly to me.
