STATUS: Senior Administrative & Professional (Law Librarian) - Twelve
month, full-time positions, reporting to the Associate
Director of the Law Library.

ACQUISITIONS AND COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: Manages the acquisitions functions in the Technical
Services Department of the College of Law Library. Evaluates and selects
materials for the Law Library according to the collection development policy
and in consultation with the Associate Director, faculty and librarians.
Manages acquisitions activities including bibliographic searching, ordering,
receipt and payment of materials in a variety of formats and languages.
Handles gifts and oversees bindery and preservation. Selects and
communicates with vendors and publishers. Manages the materials budget for
the Law Library and prepares annual and special reports. Trains, supervises
and evaluates staff and students performing acquisitions, bindery and
preservation work. Advises the Associate Director on matters of policy,
procedure, technology and personnel related to acquisitions and collection
development. May assist Law School faculty, students and staff members with
related services and projects such as providing reference service. Serves
on Law Library, College of Law and University committees.
Qualifications: MLS degree from ALA-accredited program (or foreign
equivalent) plus a minimum of three years of library experience. Law
library or academic library experience preferred. Experience with
Innovative Interfaces System or other integrated library system and OCLC or
other bibliographic utility required. Familiarity with legal materials and
government documents, current trends in acquisitions, new technologies and
Internet resources and supervisory experience desirable.
CATALOGING LIBRARIAN
Responsibilities: Responsible for managing cataloging functions in the
Technical Services Department of the Law Library. Performs original
cataloging and applies Library of Congress classification and subject
headings to English and foreign language monographs and serials in a variety
of formats. Performs and monitors database maintenance. Works
collaboratively with the retrospective conversion librarian in resolving
problems and monitoring the conversion and reclassification project.
Trains, supervises and evaluates staff and students performing cataloging
and end processing of library materials. Advises Associate Director on
matters of policy, procedure, technology and personnel related to cataloging
and bibliographic control of the Law Library's collection. May assist Law
School faculty, students and staff with related services and projects.
Serves on Law Library, College of Law and University committees.
Qualifications: MLS degree from ALA accredited institution (or foreign
equivalent) plus a minimum of two years of library experience; cataloging
experience preferred. Knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress
classification and subject headings, LC Rule Interpretations and good
knowledge of MARC format required. Experience with Innovative Interfaces
System or other integrated library system and OCLC or other bibliographic
utility required. Familiarity with legal materials and government
documents, current trends in cataloging and new technologies, and
supervisory experience desirable.
THE LAW LIBRARY
The Law Library is housed in Drinko Hall on the main campus of The Ohio
State University. Its staff of 8.75 FTE librarians and 10 classified civil
service personnel actively serves the forty faculty members and 675 J.D.
students of the College of Law in addition to many students and faculty
members from other departments of the University and the legal community.
The Law Library's collection consists of approximately 632,000 volumes and
equivalents and is particularly strong in the areas of dispute resolution,
health care law, international law and socio-legal studies. In 1993, the
Law Library occupied a substantial new addition which more than doubled its
space and provided the groundwork for a rapid expansion in the use of
automated information systems.
The Law Library shares an Innovative Interfaces
acquisitions/serials/circulation system with the University and Health Sciences
Libraries and works extensively with these libraries on issues of mutual
interest. The Law Library participates in OhioLINK, a state-wide library
automation
project, which links Ohio's major institutions of higher education
(including eight law school libraries). The staff of the Law Library have
ample opportunity to
participate at the University and state levels in the development and
evolution of OhioLINK.

I. POSITION INFORMATION
TITLE: REFERENCE/AUDIO VISUAL SERVICES LAW LIBRARIAN

II. RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides sophisticated research and reference service to the faculty and
students of the College of Law, the university and to other patrons
of the Law Library.
Participates in the regular rotation of evening and weekend reference duty.
Takes part in the evaluation and selection of general information
resources in all formats.
Primary responsibility for all activities relating to the provision of
audio-visual and microform services including equipment setups and the
training, supervision and evaluation of student assistants.
Prepares tools such as research guides and bibliographies, and compiles
other instructional handouts.
Teaches Introduction to Legal Research, lectures on legal research to
various classes including teaching computer assisted legal research to
faculty and students. Serves on Law Library, College of Law, and
university-wide committees.

and JD from ABA accredited (or equivalent foreign)
institution preferred.
2. Experience with online searching and the Internet and interest in
audio-visual and multi-media technology highly desirable.
3. Some Law Library experience desirable.
