The AALL Spectrum, March 1997 issue, included an announcement about the
Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) "NACO Training" for law catalogers
to be held at the Library of Congress just before the Baltimore conference
this summer. Here are some further details, for those who may be
interested. If you have any questions, please contact Carolyn Sturtevant at
LC's Cooperative Cataloging Team; her telephone numbers and e-mail address
are given at the end of this message.

>Dear Law Librarians:
>
>We are sending this message out to all who have expressed either
>to Alva Stone or to us here at LC their interest in attending the
>July 15-18 NACO training session. We are at the stage of
>finalizing our plans, and need to have a more accurate view of
>how many of you will be attending. Although our list of possible
>names includes about two dozen candidates, we have received only
>about one dozen applications for membership in the Program for
>Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), which serves as the official
>application to attend the July course.
>
>If any of you needs an application for the PCC, please contact me
>with your fax number, and we will fax it to you as soon as
>possible.
>
>We realize that many of you in expressing interest in the class
>are just learning about NACO and the commitment expected of those
>who attend NACO training. We expect that your request to attend
>NACO training also serves as your commitment to become an active
>NACO contributor following the ground rules given below:
>
>1. contribute approx. 200 name authority records per year (this
>includes new NARs and changes to NARs).
>
>2. contribute via OCLC or RLIN using a NACO authorization
>
>3. follow AACR2R, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations
>(LCRIs), USMARC Authority Format, and other NACO procedures
>
>4. undergo a review period for records you contribute, leading
>to independent NACO status
>
>5. maintain a NACO contact at your institution who will keep in
>touch with the LC Coop Team to handle queries and file
>maintenance, and to keep abreast of developments in the NACO and
>PCC programs.
>
>There is no cost to attend the NACO training, but participants
>are responsible for their own expenses. Each library represented
>will be given a new subscription to the LCRIs, USMARC Authority
>Format, and the NACO Participant's Manual, in addition to the
>free NACO training materials.
>
>We hope to honor the applications of everyone, but need to work
>with real numbers before we can confirm your reservation for the
>course. We know that many of you are eager to make your travel
>plans. Please have your PCC application to us by May 16, so that
>we can notify participants officially of their acceptance by May
>23. Thank you.
