Actually, I did not have in mind a certification that would
be in any way a substitute for the MLS. There are segments of
the profession that would lend themselves to this. Such as,
a certification in Legal Research. Even some with the MLS do
not have this proficiency because their schools did not offer it.
However, there are many people who might work in law firms or
other law libraries who do not have the MLS who would benefit
from training in Legal Research, and who could use such a
certificate to better themselves.
Another proficiency could be copy cataloging. Are all those
who do copy-cataloging, owners of the MLS? Probably not, but
I expect that a number of people who are doing this or who are
planning to hire someone to do this would benefit from a
certification of proficiency being available.
The MLS trains one to do a lot of things, but mainly it is
directed toward training people to be directors or middle
management. There are a number of threshhold skills, like
copy-cataloging and Legal Research (perhaps this should be given
a different caption in such a context), that do not require
high level management skills. These people do valuable work
and should be given training/recognition accordingly.
More thoughts for this Monday morning. It is a glorious day
in Little Rock, conducive to deep thinking.
