Serial claims and West -- new wrinkle

We have been claiming serials regularly from our Innovative system for
years. Naturally enough, many of those claims went to West, where they
were understood and filled. Well and good. Claims to CBC were also
sent from the same system, understood, and filled. Claims to LCP were
sent, usually mis-understood, and material we already had resent. When
this was returned, the standing orders were canceled - by LCP.

Now, however, we have the West Group. Our last batches of paper claims
were returned with a note that we must now supply an account number. I
called to make sure this was a new policy and not just a disgruntled
clerk, and was told that actually the policy didn't change because they'd
always had to look up our account number anyway on old claims. Since
they'd never returned unfilled claims in batches before, it does appear
to be a change in practice if not policy.

You will not be surprised to learn that, when I asked if there were any
plans to accept electronically generated claims, that would come complete
with account numbers, the clerk had no idea what I was talking about.
When I asked for the name of someone that I *could* talk to about this
concept, she had no idea who that might be.

We can make adjustments, with some inconvenience, to our system to
accommodate this new necessity of adding account numbers for West claims.
It would be helpful if West adjusted, with some inconvenience, I'm sure,
to accepting electronic claims as do some of our other legal information
vendors. I just hope they don't decide to adopt the old LCP practice of
canceling standing orders for things that were returned because of their
errors. I'm not holding my breath.
