Judy:

Many thanks for the clarification. After last year's meeting, and additional
print commentary on the subject, I had no doubt that the Board and the
Membership were in agreement. HOWEVER, the resolution doesn't
reflect that understanding. It says, "Be it resolved that the American
Association of Law Libraries shall open its membership TO ALL PEOPLE,
WITH THE SAME RIGHTS OF VOTING AND OFFICE, and for the same
dues, except for such discounts as it seems wise." [empasis mine].

I WANT to vote in favor of opening "membership", and I know that my
interests and concerns are shared by the Board. But the resolution
does not clearly express that. The resolution as I read it expresses a
resolve to give ALL PEOPLE, who choose to become members, THE
SAME RIGHTS OF VOTING AND OFFICE.

I DO know how difficult it is to draft aspirations or legislation, especially
when trying to distill into one resolution all the ideas, thoughts, concerns
of many people, and have spent some time trying to figure out how *I*
would word the resolution. I also know that the Board, Task Force and
Special Committee members struggled with this as well. But we
shouldn't need to have the resolution explained to us; it should say
clearly what it means.
