Subject: AALL Membership

Please allow me to correct one misunderstanding, and further
explain the AALL Board's reasoning behind the resolution
that will be voted on in July.

We are proposing that any person or institution interested
in law libraries and the objectives of the Association be
allowed full membership rights, with the exception of only
those who are employed as law librarians having the right to
hold office.(If I could underline or highlight I would do
so, to emphasize these words.)

The Board is NOT proposing that our mission statement be
changed. Let me remind AALL members that the Board (to which
only law librarians could be elected) is firmly committed to
our strategic plan. Everything that we plan and conduct is
grounded in that plan. No other entity can change it. The
membership votes, and will continue to vote, for people who
will run for office. It always is the responsibility of the
membership to ensure the election of law librarians who will
be responsive to the members needs and concerns. It is
reasonable and logical to assume that law librarians, and
those who work in and for law libraries, will continue to
have an overwhelming majority of votes.

Please take the time to read "Toward a Renaissance in
Law Librarianship," which was provided to all AALL
members. Debate on the issues will be held during the Annual
Meeting Business Meetings.
