Many of you saw Eleanor Lewis's post concerning the recently announced
Judicial Conference of the United States' consideration of the ABA Universal
Citation system. I would like to assure AALL members that we are aware of
the opportunity for the public to comment. Early last week, I spoke
directly with Joan Countryman at the Administrative Office of the U.S.
Courts, who provided information similar to that found in the Federal
Register.
The AALL Citation Formats Committee is drafting a statement, particularly
addressing the two issues identified in the Federal Register (Feb 21, 1997,
V.62, #35, p.8037-8038). Those issues are: (1) Whether the federal courts
should adopt the form of official citation for court decisions recommended
by the ABA resolution; and, (2) The costs and benefits such a decision would
have on the courts, the bar, and the public. As always, we will also
provide some necessary (but limited) background information.
In addition, the AALL Citation Formats Committee has asked Bob Oakley to
request an opportunity to testify at the public hearing, and he has agreed
to do so. The decision about who is to testify will be made by a panel of
judges.
Upon its completion, the statement will be posted on law-lib, AALLNET and
other lists.
If you have questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to contact me.
