MANAGING WEB SERVERS: The Technical, Fiscal and Personnel Issues

A full-day presentation dealing with the practical issues of managing a
successful web server. Key areas to be covered will include:
1) SERVER BASICS -- Purpose and audience issues, types of server software,
platform and operating systems, and directory/file issues
2) SERVER TOOLS -- document/format converters, link managers, log/statistics
modules, interactive map and graphics editors, and Java wizards!
3) PERSONNEL ISSUES -- Single person operations, team operations, determining
FTE server support, out-sourcing options
4) FISCAL ISSUES -- Analyzing startup and ongoing costs
5) POLICY ISSUES -- Access, quality control, types of information, and
accountability/liability.
SPEAKER:
Michael Leach is Head Librarian, Physics Research Library at Harvard University.
In the National ASIS Organization, he serves as 1997 Chair of SIG Management. He
is Web Administrator of the Harvard Department of Physics Home Page, a McKinley
3-star site. He is also conductor of workshops for Harvard Universtiy and the
New England Chapter of ASIS on basic and advanced HTML. His "Managing Web
Servers" workshop sold out at the 1996 ASIS National Conference.

The Faculty Club is on the corner of University Avenue and Woodside Drive,
across from the University Bookstore. To get to campus:
FROM NORTH OR SOUTH I-75: Exit at Hopple St., turn left on Hopple St., cross
Central Parkway and go up Martin Luther King Dr. Turn right into campus on
Woodside Drive, which is the first light after you cross Clifton Ave. Take an
immediate right into the Library garage, or immediate left into CBA garage.
Parking is not included in the registraion fee.
FROM NORTHEAST VIA I-71: Exit at Taft Rd., a one-way street going west that
becomes Calhoun St. At end of Calhoun St., turn right onto Clifton Ave., then
right onto Martin Luther King Dr. Turn right into campus on Woodside Drive...
and follow directions above.
FROM SOUTH VIA I-71: Exit at Reading Rd. and turn right. At fork, bear right,
staying on Reading Rd. Turn left onto Martin Luther King Dr. Turn left into
campus on Woodside Drive... and follow directions above.
