Appleman v. Couch comparison - Summary

Here is a summary of all the information I have received from publisher
editors, colleagues, and publisher reps.
My analysis was not exhaustive so please do not rely heavily on it.

Both Appleman and Couch are being revised extensively. Couch 3d will
revise its 33 bound volumes into approx. 25 looseleaf volumes.
Appleman is replacing its 57 bound volumes with newly revised volumes.
It appears that Appleman will be divested to Reed/Elsvier.

Here are some of MY observations about the sets.

Couch has extensive (2,400) forms, Appleman has less than 100
Couch is better indexed - larger index
Appleman is less costly to keep up to date. (around $200/yr. less -
estimate)
Appleman will most likely be divested to another large publisher.
Couch has many references to AmJur and ALRs - Appleman does not,
nor does it cite West topic and key numbers.
Couch and Appleman are cited equally by the courts (a search in
mega;mega on Lexis)

Here are estimated cost comparisons of Couch on Insurance v.
Appleman on Insurance Law and Practice
would cost $2,900 to purchase Couch in print.
It would cost $1,600 to purchase Couch on CD-ROM (folios based)
Annual upkeep after the first year would be around $700.00 for either
format.
It would cost $2,600 to purchase Appleman in print - no CD-ROM
available?
It would cost $400.00 - 650.00 annually for the next 3-4 years to keep
Appleman current (est. volume revisions and pocket parts)
