We are considering security systems in an effort to control who is
coming into the library - as opposed to which books are leaving the
library. Does anyone out there have any experience or opinions on this
subject?
At this point, seems like a "card swipe" entry system to the reading
room may be the most popular option. Thus, anyone could enter the front
part of the library, but only those who had proper access or visitors passes
could enter the rest of the building. However, we are just beginning to study
this issue and would appreciate your input. We are particularly
concerned about the following questions:
1) when to operate the system - all hours vs. evening only?
2) what about general public - what to do about non students, fac., staff?
3) chilling effect on GPO obligations
4) increased effort and hassle for staff having to become police persons
5) increased effort for students, fac., staff regarding having proper ID
6) implementation problems that occur when beginning the new system.
Thanks for your time and thoughts,
