Colleagues,
I am looking for two quotations related to the history of the atomic bomb. One of our
professors has the quotations in Japanese, but would prefer finding them in the original
English to translating them back.
At the time of the first test of an atom bomb, Robert Oppenheimer reportedly quoted a
portion of the poem "Mahabharata." That is the first quote we are seeking.
The second is a portion of the conversation of the Enola Gay crew on the way to dropping
the bomb on Hiroshima. The source indicates that the crew members joked about their
mission. Any transcripts or reports of those conversations would be very helpful.
I am checking several books from our main library on the history of the bomb and
biographies of Oppenheimer, but have not found either quote yet. Any suggestions of
sources likely to contain either quote would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.
