Our campus architect has asked us to explore whether anyone is using or
knows of exit hardware for doors that is ADA compliant and is also
'sensitive to a library's security needs'.
Several unattended exits are remote from the circulation area, for fire
safety reasons. They are wired into the fire alarm system and release
whenever a fire alarm sounds, but the architect is looking for something
beyond that, apparently anticipating situations that might not trigger the
fire alarm.
We are open to the public, but have no guards or building security staff.
An alarm that sounds if the door is opened might have some deterrent value,
but that's about all the good it would do. After mulling this over for
several days, I'm beginning to think we might be asking for the impossible,
but hey, we librarians do the impossible on a fairly regular basis.
Have any of you achieved this particular 'impossibility'?
Happy holidays.
