The AALL State Court County Law Libraries SIS welcomes all members
of AALL to submit nominations for the Bethany J. Ochal award.

        NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR THE BETHANY J. OCHAL AWARD
          FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE PROFESSION
                                
        The State, Court & County Law Libraries Special Interest Section
of the American Association of Law Libraries awards program includes
a series of triennial awards presented at its annual meeting. They are
the Bethany J. Ochal Awardfor Distinguished Service to the Profession,
the O. James Werner Award for Distinguished Service to Persons with
Disabilities, and the Connie E. Bolden Publications Award.

        In the past, the Connie E. Bolden Publications Award has been
presented to Kendall Svengalis, for his work as founding editor of the
American Association of Law Libraries Relations with Information
Vendor Committee CRIV Sheet, and Charles Dyer, for editing the
Sourcebook for Law Library Governing Boards and Committees.
     
        The Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the
Profession had been presented to Richard L. Beer Director of the
Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library in Pontiac, Michigan for more
than thirty years. During his career he was active in library and bar
organizations as well as serving as a mentor to fledging law librarians.

        This year, nominations are being accepted for the Bethany J.
Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession for
presentation at the State, Court, and County Law Libraries SIS meeting
on July 21, 1997, in Baltimore, Maryland. Eligible candidates are members
of the State, Court and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section
who are nearing the end of their library careers or who have retired
recently. Among criteria the Awards Committee consider is:

?Achievement in a state, court, or county law library
?Contributions to the State Court and County Special Interest Section of
AALL
?Contributions to the American Association of Law Libraries
?Contributions to the professional literature
?Recognition by members of the legal or governmental community the
recipient served
?Contributions to legal research, teaching, outreach efforts
?Service to the profession of law librarianship
?Mentoring of younger members of the profession

        Bethany J. Ochal began her distinguished career in law
librarianship as reference librarian at the Detroit Bar Association Library
in 1951. During her career she served as Librarian of the
Detroit Bar Association Library, as Law Librarian at Wayne State
University, and as Director of the Orange County (California) Law Library
 where she retired in 1988.

        Bethany was an active member of the American Association of
Law Libraries. She chaired the Membership, Chapters, and Audio-Visual
Committees and the State, Court and County Law Libraries SIS as well
as serving on Exchange of Duplicates, Statistics and Directory, Exhibits
and Recruitment Committees. She belonged to the International
Association of Law Libraries and was a member of the Board of
Directors of the Law Library Microform Consortium. Bethany presided
over the Ohio Regional Association of Law Librarians, the Council of
California County Law Librarians and the Orange County Library
Association.

        Bethany received a J.D. in 1945 from Wayne State University.
She was admitted to practice before the Michigan Supreme Court, the
U.S. Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit
and the U.S. Supreme Court. She practiced law in partnership with her
husband from 1945 to 1961. She is a past-president of Women
Lawyer's Association of Michigan, Chairman of the Legal Publications
Committee of the State Bar of Michigan and was on the Board of
Directors of the George A. Parker Foundation.

        The Awards Committee welcomes nominations for the Bethany J.
Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession from AALL
members and any member of the constituency that the nominee has
served. In placing a person's name in nomination, please include the
following information.

1. Full name and current address of the nominee

2. Current and past employment of the nominee

3. Short narrative explaining why you believe your nominee should
receive this award

4. Your name, address and telephone number in case the committee
needs additional information
