PRE-CONFERENCE NACO TRAINING FOR LAW CATALOGERS:
                         July 14-18, 1997.

Law libraries wishing to participate in the national Program for
Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) can submit applications to have their catalog
librarians trained at the *Library of Congress* in name authority
cooperative (NACO) work. Only a handful of law libraries are among the 238
NACO libraries worldwide, and the program needs greater representation from
specialists like us!
The goals of the PCC are 1) to enhance the timely availability,
in a cost-effective manner, of more cataloging records for sharing and use
by others; 2) to develop and maintain mutually acceptable standards; 3)
promote the values of timely access and cost-effectiveness and expand the
pool of catalogers using acceptable standards; 4) increase the sharing and
use of foreign cataloging records; and 5) provide for ongoing discussion,
planning, and operations to further the program's mission.
Upon completion of the five-day NACO training, and subject to a
successful period of review, the law library will be submitting new
authority records--or correcting existing records--via OCLC or RLIN, either
of which will then transmit the record to Library of Congress for
redistribution to libraries all over the world, through subscriptions to the
LC _Name Authorities_.
With the AALL Annual Meeting scheduled for the following week,
July 19-24, just one hour away from Washington, in Baltimore, this is a
great opportunity for law catalogers to attend the training session at the
Library of Congress. Participants must pay for their own transportation,
lodging and meals. However, all NACO-related documentation will be provided
by LC. For more information, please contact Alva T. Stone at Florida State
University Law Library (tel. 904-644-2881, e-mail: atstone@law.fsu.edu) or
Ann Della Porta, LC's Cooperative Cataloging Team Leader (tel. 202-707-7920,
e-mail: dellapor@mail.loc.gov).
