A short while ago, Mark Estes noted that the American Lawyer for
September had an article on the West-Thomson merger. It took a while for
those of us on the West coast to receive it, but it has now arrived, and
I want to second Mark in calling atttention to it. It is the most
detailed account I have yet seen, and it discusses the West-Thomson
"effort to defang potential opponents." It notes that "...neutralizing
[AALL] was a coup for Thomson, because librarians have a detailed
knowledge of the market and many resent Thomson's pricing policies."
The outcome of Thomsons efforts to head off opposition: "The librarians
association...was neutralized at the outset, and the ABA was hamstrung by
its own ornate procedures, so there were few advocates for the broad
interests of consumers.
