A few days ago I remember seeing a posting about Swoosie Kurtz being in a
new sitcom playing a librarian. For some strange and wonderful reason (in
a way), I actually saw this new program on Monday night. It's not the
greatest sitcom by any means, in fact it's downright silly, but it had
one great scene.

Swoosie Kurtz does indeed play a librarian, a very nicely dressed
librarian with no bun, glasses, or orthopedic shoes in sight. She works
in a public library, and the scene in question started out with Swoosie
teaching an English as a second language class. Her god daughter comes in
to ask for money. The god daughter is the title character, "Party Girl."
So she comes in to ask for money and Swoosie says that perhaps she should
get a job. It just so happens that a library clerk position is open, but
Swoosie implies that Party Girl may not be right for the job. Party Girl
excalims in horror: "You don't think I can be a LIBRARIAN???" Swoosie
says sternly, "Mary, a librarian is a professional with a masters degree
in library science. This job is just a library clerk." Party Girl is duly
chastised and shame-facedly apologizes and says she'll try it out.

Certainly not great drama, but it is great to see our profession
portrayed so well even if it's in a silly sitcom.

Take care.
