Sarah: Excellent summary of the issues! If we could really get this
discussion going, I'm sure it would have some useful consequences. The
problem that sometimes seems to occur, is that people respond to these
messages, in agreement or disagreement, before they've thought out all
sides of the question. Your posting is the exception that proves the
rule, not that you are advocating a position, but that you recognize that
there may be good and bad in every commercial posting. Further, we as
librarians should be careful to think before we jump in with emotional
(and how advertising can be so emotionally volatile is still a concept
I'm a little baffled by) responses lest we be later identified with
positions we may not be so eager, after more thoughtful reflection, to have
known at some future time. Prior inconsistent statements can be used to
impeach credibility, you know! (Just a little personal refresher from my
Evidence class!)
Have a great weekend everyone! It's Greek Festival here in Toledo, so I'm
going to be heading for the grape leaves booth as soon as I can!
