A few weeks ago the question was asked whether the new edition of the
Bluebook allows citation of newspaper articles from electronic sources.
I had suggested to the Yale Law Journal, which was in charge of the rule
for periodical materials, that they eliminate the requirement of a
pinpoint cite for newspaper material from a page other than the first
page of the article. I am pleased that they accepted this idea, which
has long been favored by librarians.
The new Rule 16.4 provides that the citer should "give only the first page
of the piece and do not indicate the location of specific material."
Furthermore, 16.4(d), which provides for citing newspaper articles from
electronic databases, says "If the electronic database does not indicate
the first page of the article, the page number need not be indicated."
There are now no barriers to using electronic sources for newspaper
articles.
