All but one of the replies I received to my question about a Bad Doctor Database
were privately sent, and I must have received 12 requests for the answers!! So, here
is a summary of what folks sent me.
The database is called "National Practitioners Data Bank" and it was promulgated
per 42 US 11101 et seq (Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986) (42 CFR 60).
It is not available to citizens. It is "confidential except to individuals reported or other
professional review activities."
Other sources were mentioned, however. Prominently mentioned was the annual
report "13,012 Questionable Doctors," (3v., 1996 is current) published by the Public
Citizen Health Research Group. This is a Ralph Nader group, and the report is
available to the public. Their address is 2000 P Street, NW, Washington,DC 20036,
202-833-3000.
Also mentioned was the Physician Insurance Association of America Data Sharing
Project, which is a database of several hundred thousand malpractice cases filed
since 1985. I believe it is for defense only. I don't have an address or phone number.
Consumer Union publishes something as well, and I am waiting to hear the exact
title and information about that.
Thanks to you all who provided such a wealth of information. The paralegal I gave it to
said this was much better information with greater detail than she had been able to
get calling around Washington. Of course! :-)
