Great news indeed! Marcia Koslov, Chair of AALL's Committee on Citation
Formats, faxed word to us yesterday. Our report was that the only
voices in opposition where the Conference of Chief Justices and the ABA
Intellectual Property Section. Saturday's issue of the ABA Journal
Annual Meeting Daily Report had as it's main frontpage story the account
of the Board of Governors giving unanimous approval to the committee
recommendation. Reporter Richard Reuben, who has written extensively on
this issue over the past couple of years, prominently mentioned that
AALL had earlier endorsed vendor and medium-neutral citatations. J.D.
Fleming, the chair of the ABA Committee and the other members deserve a
huge amount of credit for not only writing an excellent report but for
having the political astuteness to get it adopted without significant
opposition. They should get a big round of applause from all of us who
care about this issue. Carol Billings
