DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Public Services Librarian, assists in
the planning, organizing and directing of the activities of the
Public Services Division which includes the Reference Department,
the Circulation Section, Information Section and Stack and Shelving
Section. Assists the Public Services Librarian: (1) in the
selection, training, supervision and evaluation of the personnel of
the Division, (2) in the formulation, recommendation, interpretation
and implementation of policies and procedures for the Division, (3)
in the development of new service programs and in the
recommendation of service priorities, (4) in the analysis of
patrons' needs. Performs special assignments; in the absence of
the Public Services Librarian, functions as head of the Division;
other duties as assigned.
Oversees and coordinates the daily activities of the Reference
Department of seven (7) reference librarians. Performs the duties
of a Senior Reference Librarian, including working at the reference
desk. Researches patron complaints relating to reference services.
Communicates administrative policies and decisions to the
Department staff and solicits their input.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree from a library school accredited by the American
Library Association and a law degree from a law school accredited
by the American Bar Association. Four (4) years experience as a
Senior Reference Librarian at the Los Angeles County Law Library,
or six (6) years of relevant experience in a large law library
performing duties equivalent to a Senior Reference Librarian at the
Los Angeles County Law Library. Demonstrated managerial ability.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Principles, trends and practices of professional
library work; law library methods, techniques and terminology;
professional library management methods and practices; legal
reference work, legal publications, publishers; administrative,
financial, economic and social trends as they relate to library
development; advanced and complex problems of reference, research
methods and other major library functions; technological
developments as they apply to public services; word processing and
spreadsheet programs.
Ability to: Apply professional knowledge to the practical problems
of the job; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with
Library patrons, co-workers, supervisors and others contacted
during the course of work; analyze situations accurately and take
effective action; speak and write effectively; plan, organize,
direct and evaluate the work of professional, paraprofessional and
clerical personnel; apply creativity in the formulation of needed
changes in methods and procedures.
