As some of you know, Duke is requiring incoming students to own
computers (not necessarily laptops) with this year's entering class.
I am aware that we are not first to do this (e.g., I know Stanford
University and the University of Richmond have such requirements),
but we are in a small (and I'd guess growing) number of schools
moving in this direction.
I have proposed a program for next year's AALL annual meeting in
Baltimore, which would look at our experience and the experience of
other schools in implementing an ownership requirement. It also would
be useful to hear from schools that have considered and rejected such
a requirement. My goal is to include a representative from some other
schools, including one that has rejected the requirement, in the
program. For those of you unfamiliar with AALL programs, they
generally last 90 minutes.
I have also spoken to John Mayer about doing a similar presentation
at next year's CALI meeting (or should I say, Law School Computing
Conference).
Please reply directly to me.
