RE: Action Alert
Two items for those interested in government information to be aware of
and act upon. The first regards appropriations, the second is a copy of
the relevant article in ALAWON about an amendment about GPO Staff, it
details the action necessary quite well.
Grass-roots efforts to inform your Senators and Representatives
are quite important - especially if you are in a state with a Senator on
the Appropriations committee or Legislative Branch Subcommittee.
==============================================
1- Senate Appropriations:
The House cut the funding of two sets near and dear to our hearts - the
Congressional Record and the US Congressional Serial Set. Specifics are
bulleted below. Your calls, faxes, and letters should urge restoration
of the cuts.
The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to mark up the Leg. Br.
Appropriations bill tomorrow, July 19 (H.R. 3754). The key Senators
are Hatfield, Byrd, Mack, Bennett, Campbell, Murray, Mikulski, Stevens.
* Urge funding the Superintendent of Documents Salaries and Expenses
appropriation for FY 1997 at the full amount requested, $30,827,000.
* The House of Representatives cut $1,200,000 from the Public
Printer's request, projecting that this reduction is possible by
converting most Serial Sets to CD-ROM. Under the House plan,
only the 50 regional depository libraries, plus one library in
each state without a regional, would receive a bound set.
Currently, 463 depository libraries have selected the paper bound
Serial Set so they can provide permanent access to the work of
Congress for their users. Most of these libraries would receive
the Serial Set in non-permanent microfiche or electronic versions
instead of the bound paper set if funding is not restored.
* The House cut $1,050,000 from GPO's request, with the intention of
converting the bound Congressional Record to CD-ROM.

LEGISLATIVE BRANCH APPROPRIATIONS--H.R. 3754
H.R. 3754, the FY97 appropriations bill for the Legislative
Branch passed the House on July 10. Rep. Jennifer Dunn (R-WA)
sponsored a successful amendment to cut the Government Printing
Office staff by 100 to approximately 3,600 employees. Opponents
of the amendment cited previous staff cuts of 1,000 since 1993,
but the amendment passed by voice vote. Senate subcommittee
action on the bill is expected this week.
ACTION NEEDED: This proposed cut in personnel could impact the
Government Printing Office's ability to provide government
information services. Library supporters are urged to contact
Senate Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee Members to
ask them to reject the Dunn language. Senate Switchboard is:
(202)234-3121.
