About two weeks ago, on behalf of the AALL Bylaws Committee, I posted
a message on law-lib about the Committee's recommendation that the
Association adopt Sturgis' Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure
in place of Robert's Rules for conducting Association business. This
change was studied by committee members for at least three years and
will now be discussed at Monday's Business meeting and voted on at
Wednesday's Business meeting. The reasons for this proposed switch
were outlined in the February and March issues of the AALL
Newsletters and were summarized in the previous posting to law-lib.
So far there have been no responses to the law-lib post. Those of us
on the Bylaws Committee strongly encourage questions, concerns, and
objections be sent to law-lib (law-lib@ucdavis.edu ) so issues can be
thoroughly considered in advance of the annual meeting. Staff at the
American Institute for Parliamentarians and the National Association
of Parliamentarians have been very helpful as we studied this matter
and have professed a willingness to continue answering any questions
our members may have. But it isn't very feasible to try to contact
them from the floor as discussion takes place at the Business
meeting. Please feel free to disseminate this invitation to express
ideas to individuals and lists you think would be interested. If you
prefer to get in touch with me personally, I can be reached at
linda.stephenson@law.utah.edu or by phone at 801-581-6438. We
realize this may not be a "sizzling" issue but hope interested
members will take the time to share their views during this last week
before the meeting. Thanks for your attention.
