The Academic Law Libraries SIS is pleased to present a panel on LEXIS &
WESTLAW student reps at the annual convention Wednesday, July 24, 3:15-4:45
(the special time slot provided for SIS's). While this is the last official
meeting time before the closing reception (and many of you may feel like
kicking up your heels instead of attending another meeting), please try to
attend as this meeting will give you the opportunity to meet with LEXIS &
WESTLAW officials in an informal setting and hear their views concerning the
goals of the student rep program. It will also give librarians the chance to
share ideas and concerns.
If you've created guidelines over the years which help the program function
effectively in your school, come share them with us. If you've encountered
problems which are begging for a solution, share them too.
The panel discussion will feature representatives from LEXIS & WESTLAW, who
will discuss the history of the CALR student representative program and
describe corporate goals and expectations for the programs. Several academic
librarians will discuss how the student rep program works in their libraries
and share strategies for maximizing the benefits and avoiding the pitfalls
of student rep management.
The goal of the program is to "bring together a variety of people with
relevant experience and develop guidelines for effective operations during
the course of the discussions." Audience participation will be encouraged.
In addition to Ms. Sanderson, other speakers on the program are: Joyce M.
Janto, Deputy Director of the Law Library, University of Richmond School of
Law Library; June Liebert, Electronic Services Librarian, Hugh & Hazel
Darling Law Library, UCLA School of Law; Camille M. Riley, Library Director
and Associate Professor of Law, West Virginia University Law Library, and
Linda M. Weir, Head of Public Services, University of California Hastings
College of Law Library; William H. Lindberg, Manager, Education Services,
West Publishing Company will represent West Publishing Company, and
LEXIS/NEXIS will be represented by Nicolas Terry, newly appointed director
of Legal Education and Marsha Diamond.
If you'd like to submit questions for discussion, problems, solutions or
guidelines, please contact Rosalie Sanderson by phone at (352) 392-0417 or
e-mail at sanderso@law.ufl.edu.
