I. POSITION INFORMATION
TITLE: Head of Technical Services
SALARY: Negotiable
STATUS: Senior Administrative and Professional (Law
Librarian) - Twelve Month, full-time position
reporting to the Associate Director of the Law
Library

II. RESPONSIBILITIES
* Leading the Technical Services Department the College
of Law library, including: overseeing and integrating
the daily operations of acquisitions, serials control,
cataloging, retrospective conversion, bindery and
preservation.
* Serving as the Law Library's administrator of the
Innopac system shared with the University and
Health Sciences Libraries. Serving as the Law
Library's liaison with OHIONET and OCLC.
* Training, supervising and evaluating librarians,
classified civil service staff (in consultation with
the appropriate librarians) and students in the
department.
* Advising the Associate Director and Director on
matters of policy, procedure, technology and
personnel related to Technical Services.
* In addition, the Head of Technical Services
performs original cataloging and applies the
Library of Congress classification system to serials
and monographs received in the Law Library in a
wide variety of formats OR is responsible for
acquisitions functions such as the evaluation,
selection, ordering, receipt and payment of
materials in all formats, the creation and
maintenance of associated records, selection and
evaluation of vendors and monitoring of the
materials budget.
* Serving on Law Library, College of Law and
University-wide committees.
* May assist Law faculty, students and staff
members with related projects and services such
as providing reference assistance. Some evening
and weekend work may be required.
* Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director
or Director.

III. THE LAW LIBRARY
The Law Library shares a new Innovative Interfaces' catalog/
acquisitions/serials/circulation system with the University and
Health Sciences Libraries and works extensively with these
libraries on issues of mutual interest. The Law Library
participates in OhioLINK, a state-wide library automation project
which links Ohio's major institutions of higher education
(including eight law school libraries). The staff of the Law
Library have ample opportunity to participate at the University
and state levels in the development and evolution of OhioLINK.
The Law Library is housed in Drinko Hall on the main campus of
The Ohio State University. Its staff of 8.75 FTE librarians and
10 classified civil service personnel actively serves the forty
faculty members and 660 J.D. students of the College of Law in
addition to many students and faculty members from other
departments of the University. The Law Library's collection
consists of approximately 600,000 volumes and equivalents and is
particularly strong in the areas of alternative dispute
resolution, health care law, international law and socio-legal
studies. In 1993, the Law Library occupied a substantial new
addition which more than doubled its space and provided the
groundwork for a rapid expansion in the use of automated
information systems.
The Ohio State University is located in Columbus, the largest
city in Ohio and the state capital. Columbus is a vigorous,
growing city which offers a wide variety of cultural,
entertainment, dining and recreational opportunities. Ohio State
offers a full array of Big Ten sports. Good and affordable
housing can be found within easy reach of the campus.
QUALIFICATIONS
MLS degree from ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent
required, plus substantial technical services experience, preferably
in more than one area, in a law library or academic library.
Demonstrated managerial and supervisory ability. Excellent
communication skills. Experience with OCLC or other
bibliographic utility and extensive experience with Innopac
or other integrated library system is essential. Substantial
knowledge of Library of Congress Cataloging practice, AACR2,
MARC format and knowledge of automation applications is highly
desirable. Law library experience or knowledge of legal
materials is desirable, but not essential.
