Prototype CFR Database Will Be Available
Washington, DC: AALL conference attendees can see the latest
applications of the U.S. Government Printing Office's award-
winning online service, GPO Access, at Booth 525 in the Indiana
Convention Center. Heading the list of new applications is a
prototype database of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
Conference attendees interested in learning first-hand "what's
new" with the Federal Depository Library Program and GPO Access
can hear Judy Russell, Director of the GPO's
Office of Electronic Information Dissemination Services. Russell
will discuss the recently published final report to Congress on
the "Study To Identify Measures Necessary For A Successful
Transition To A More Electronic Federal Depository Library
Program" on Sunday, July 21 at the GovDocs SIS Update session at
4:30 p.m. She will speak on "Making The Most of Government
Electronic Information" on Wednesday, July 24 at 8:30 a.m. and
show highlights of the GPO Access service, including the online
CFR.
The GPO Access service, launched in June, 1994, features access
to key, daily-updated federal databases including Congressional
Bills, Congressional Record, Federal Register, GAO Reports, the
U.S. Code and an expanding list of databases. Most documents are
available in both ASCII text and Adobe Acrobat Portable Document
Format (PDF), which allows a user to view and print exact
facsimilies of the printed version of these documents.
Users download an average of more than two million documents per
month from the 58 databases available for free public access
through GPO Access. Recently, the service recorded its 10
millionth retrieved document. For instance, users can now perform
GILS application searches from over 25 agencies, find out about
how to access from the Superintendent of Documents print versions
of published Government documents, as well as access more than
7,500 files from dozens of federal agencies via the Federal
Bulletin Board. The initial implementation of parts of the CFR
has been an eagerly awaited addition to the GPO's growing list of
databases.
