Law-Lib,
I know this doesn't directly concern law libraries (USGS maps),
but I thought, as librarians, you might want to express yourself to the
faceless bureaucrats about yet another federal government documents outrage
perpetrated on us as both taxpayers & librarians.
Sorry if you already read this message.

Although short notice, this may be of great concern to some of you. Email
today if possible. Sorry for repeat postings. Jere

Dear Jere,
At the same time I received your messages, I also learned that the USGS is
planning to dispose of published copies of Geologic Maps that are poor sellers
and assertedly too expensive to store. The priorities for what maps to dump
are being established as I write.

I ask that you use your excellent email address list to alert folks that this
exercise is taking place. I'm told that appeals for maps to be saved will be
received until 3:00pm Central time today. Suggestions for keepers should be
sent to Elly Brouwers, Associate Regional Geologist for the Central Region at
<brouwers@gdsvr1.cr.usgs.gov> in Denver.

Concerns about a policy of destroying ANY geologic maps that were produced at a
cost of millions of dollars to American taxpayers may be directed to Director
Gordon Eaton, 703-648-7411 in Reston, Virginia.

I've been told that if people were interested in the maps they should have
bought them, but most corporations and researchers probably assume the maps
will be available when they need them. This may no longer be true.

Cordially,
Mike Taylor
