Just as a comparison, the $50 law student charge is an annual charge.
The flat-rate plans of Westlaw and Lexis (which do not offer use of
all the legal databases under the flat-rate), is on the order of $150
a month for solo practioners. Thus, the law school flat rate is
about 3% of the solo practitioner flat raate, and more is available
to law schools.
For example, Lexis MVP users do not have a flat rate option available
to search all federal court databases.

Academic law libraries indeed do pay for LEXIS and WESTLAW. We are
charged on the average $50 per FTE (full-time enrolled student) and
have a fixed-fee contract with each vendor. This entitles each
faculty, librarian, and law student unlimited access to searching and
printing. The law students are therefore free to "practice" CALR
without
worrying about costs. However, not all the databases or
libraries/files
are available to academic law libraries on such a contract.
