have ever read. The book listed is an Imressive work done by the author

BOOK REVIEW

The intention of writting these two volumes in Arabic and English is to
present the sources of the law and the juristic views in their original
language and forms and in a separate book, THE HUDUD recast the contents
in a
modern English expository style. This was done, so non-Arabic speaking
readers who can only read English, could go through the English version
without the vexinginterruptions of mixed English and Arabic texts. This
approach is
conducive to smooth and enjoyable reading, and a much deeper
understanding as the ideas flow uninterrupted.

Non-Arabic speaking readers, researchers and students who can read Arabic
will greatly benefit from the combination. It will help them grasp
original Arabic terminology and also enchance their command of the Arabic
language because of the easy volumes' access to the corresponding source
materials. While the two volumes - simultaneously written by the same
author - carry the same views, the author has enjoyed the freedom to
adopt a free patronising style in the address of English and Arabic
audiences.

These volumes were written:

(a) To provide all references from the Qur'an and the Sunnah on the major
current issues concerning the hudud such as definations, sources,
immutability, raison d'tere, implementation, mandatoriness, rehabilitive
forgiveness and intercession, evidence requirements types of hudud
punishments and their modes of execution, multiplicity of punishments
(accumulations on one person), medical fitness of the convict, repentance
and hudud punishments, applicability of hudud on Muslims,
non-Muslims and visitors to the Islamic State, jurisdiction over hudud
offences committed abroad, and other finer issues.

The number of each ayah, the title and number of its surah
(Qur'anic chapter)are given. All the ahadith (Sunnah Statements)
are refferred to: major and well known sources of the sunnah such as
Sahih AlBujhari, Sahih Muslim, Al-Muwatta,Sunan Al-tirmidhi, Sunan Abi
Daud, Suana Ibn Majah, Sunan Al Nasaee, Sunan Al Daraqutni, Al Sunan Al
Kubra, Musnad Ahmad B. Hanbal, Musnad Al Shafi'i and Musnad Abi Hanifah.

Moreover each hadith is reffered to that particular chapter (bab or
kitab) in which it has been reported, e.g., (Sahih Al Bukhari, "Bab
Hadith Al Ghar", Vol.p. ; Sahih Muslim, "Kitab al Hudud, Vol. ,p. ;
Sunan Al Nasaee, " Kitab Qat al Sariq, Vol. , P. . This Way, every reader
can easily find the hadith in the collection of sunnah references ha has,
regardless of the edition, publisher,or the year in which the collection
was published.

(b) To organise the statement of the shari'ah as upheld by the major
madhahi (schools of law), clarify its concepts arrange them in a coherent
form, and provide references to all supporting texts in the source-works
of each madhhab.

(c) To point out differing opinions and make a critical assessment of the
differences and findings.

Realizing the change in times and circumstances, the author has
critically examined certain vital issues and has come up with new
perspectives in an attempt to clear the Islamic Legal theory of all
repugnancies and irrationalities which were wrongly attributed to it.

The two volume volumes are, therefore, major and original references
in the comparitive study the hudud. They provide an authoritative,
comprehensive, and concise treatise on such a topic that has become vital
issues and has become vital to our times. They are indispensible
references for all research, study and reading in Islamic criminlogy and
Islamic Criminal Law.

And in the Islamic legal field, these two volumes enrich the legal
faculties of all lawyers, regardless of background or specialization.
