Image Busters

SUBJECT: Image Busters

This is a response to J.E. Gardner's remarks on the Judge Parker Comic:

At my desk I have a mug from the '88 ALA Conference that I use for pencils. On
the front is the "ugly stereotype" complete with the "shssing" finger up to
the lips and the universal "NO" sign behind her (from the Image Busters'
group). It's there to remind me and sometimes my patrons that I have a sense
of humor and to be sure that I do everything I can to dispel the stereotype in
my actions as a professional librarian enthusiastically leading my patrons
into the 21st century CyberLibrary (if that's the correct term now). Sometimes
the only way to really overcome stereotypes is one person at a time. That's
why I hope J.E. Garner's note to the cartoonist isn't an angry one, but
instead, an instructional/informative one, showing in a professional way that
librarians in the 1990s are very different from our counterparts of the 1890s.
Instead of ugly stereotypes, lets show beautiful ones.
Just my $0.02.
